Filler FAQ

Filler FAQ

JUVÉDERM is made from hyaluronic acid (HA). This HA is derived from a naturally occurring complex sugar and mimics that which is found in our skin. Depending how the sugar molecules are linked together will determine the viscosity and consistency of the filler.

What is age-related volume loss?

As you age, you start to lose HA, which causes the skin to lose structure and volume, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds. Your cheeks lose volume and the skin may begin to sag. This is because of a loss of fullness, or volume, due to the aging process

What areas can be treated with enhancement fillers?

Cheeks, nasolabial folds (nose to mouth corner), marionette lines, lips, lip lines, tear trough, jawline, earlobes

Is the procedure painful?

Many enhancement fillers contain lidocaine (a type of anesthetic) to help numb the treatment site. The doctor may also choose to numb the treatment area with ice or a topical or other injected numbing agent to further minimize discomfort.

What are the possible side effects of injectable fillers?

Most common side effects include temporary reactions at the treatment site such as tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching. Although most side effects will resolve with time, some side effects may persist longer than 30 days. The doctor may choose to treat them with medications, such as antibiotics, steroids, or hyaluronidase (an enzyme that breaks down HA). As with all skin-injection procedures, there is a risk of infection. Rarely, vision abnormalities have been reported after treatment with enhancement fillers.

How long does the treatment usually take?

The injection process can be performed during a brief office visit (about 30 minutes). You will also need to allow time to consult with your doctor prior to treatment.

What should I disclose to the doctor at my visit?

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of excessive scarring or pigmentation disorders. You should also discuss any medications that you are currently taking that can prolong bleeding, or therapy used to decrease the body’s immune response.

Can people with different skin tones/colors be treated with fillers?

Yes. In fact, JUVÉDERM® non-surgical filler has been studied in all skin types.

Does correction last forever?

Correction is temporary and may last up to one year with optimal treatment. Therefore, touch-up injections, as well as repeat injections, are usually needed to maintain optimal results. Less material (about half the amount) is usually needed for repeat injections.

What is the difference between BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM (filler)?

BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM® are two possible ways to treat moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles. Both are non-surgical, but they work differently:

* BOTOX® Cosmetic: Injected beneath the skin’s surface to target the underlying muscle activity which is one of the causes of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet. BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily reduces the activity of those muscles.

* JUVÉDERM®: Injected into the skin to temporarily smooth moderate to severe wrinkles such as those around the nose and mouth by adding volume and hydration to the skin

How much do fillers cost?

Your cost not only includes the price of the product, but more importantly, the skill and expertise of the doctor or healthcare professional who is administering your treatment. Enhancement fillers is a technique-sensitive treatment—look for someone who is licensed and trained and has experience treating patients with enhancement fillers. Be wary of discount products or “cheap” fillers—if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
