Laser Tattoo Removal

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of tattoos can be removed?
All tattoos can be removed with the laser as long as they are at least 6 months old. Either professional or homemade tattoos can be treated. The best results occur with darker colours. Yellows and pastel colours are the most difficult to remove. White is not removable nor is glow in the dark ink.

How many treatments will I need?
This depends on the age of the tattoo and how it was applied. Older tattoos (more than 20 years) are quite faded and generally need 3 treatments. Homemade or cosmetic tattoos are not as deep and also require about 3 treatments. Professionally applied or newer tattoos can take up to 10 treatments. If you only wish to lighten it, then fewer treatments are needed.

How often do you treat?
Treatments are every 6 to 8 weeks. The tattoo will continue to fade between treatments. The skin needs to completely heal before the next treatment.

What are the side effects?
The treated area will bleed slightly just like when the tattoo was applied. The skin will scab over and heal as a regular abrasion would. Occasionally the skin will blister as sunburn would. There can be some pain. Infection, scarring or changes to the skin colour are rare if the proper skin care is applied post treatment.

Does the treatment hurt?
There is some pain involved.  Either topical or injectable anesthetics can be used to minimize or eliminate the pain. Taking acetaminophen (Tylenol®) prior to the procedure helps. Ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®) can be taken but there can be more bleeding.

What type of laser do you use?
We use the Cynosure® Affinity® Q-switched laser. It is a state-of-the art tattoo removal laser. See www.cynosure.com for more information. To watch a video of  a laser tattoo removal session go to www.YouTube.com and search monarchlaser.

How much does it cost?
Each treatment will vary depending on the size, the intricacies and the colours.

On average prices are as follows:
Up to 3x3 inches $100-$200 per treatment
Up to 6x6 inches $225-$300 per treatment
Up to 10x10 inches $325-$450 per treatment
Larger than 10x10 inches priced individually

Multiple tattoos removed at one sitting—discounts may apply
